Quick answer
Give each Instagram placement its own managed link: a bio link for campaign X, a Story link sticker on date Y, and a DM or broadcast reply you plan to compare. For a Reel caption whose message is "link in bio," measure the bio destination and record the pointer separately. Compare human clicks, unique-visitor estimates, device, and location across those named links. Clicks are not conversions or earnings. A shared URL measures a shared route, even when several posts encourage people to use it.
Where affiliate links live on Instagram
Start with a placement inventory. The platform facts in this section come from the linked Instagram Help Center pages. The measurement plan is yours: decide which recommendation each URL represents and where you intend to use it.
Bio links
Instagram says you can add up to five websites to your profile, visible to anyone on or off Instagram. Its documented app workflow is Edit profile, Links, Add external link; Options, Reorder links changes their order. That Help page says this is not available on computers. Reserve a managed link for the campaign you want to measure, and record which profile slot you chose.
Story link stickers
The Help Center says a Story link sticker includes a link and redirects people to the linked website when tapped. Link stickers can only be used in organic Instagram Stories. Give a dated Story its own URL if you want its clicks separated from your bio. Instagram also says Story photos and videos disappear after 24 hours from Feed, your profile, and Direct unless added as a highlight. Note your publication date and any decision to keep that Story as a highlight when comparing time windows.
DMs and broadcast channels
For recommendations you choose to share in a DM or broadcast reply, reserve a separately named URL. This is a naming plan, not a claim about how links behave in messages. Confirm the actual placement before counting it as a usable route.
Instagram says channels are being released gradually and are not available to everyone. A public account with more than 1,000 followers can start one; members can react and reply to messages but cannot send messages. The same page says organic branded content shared in a channel must use the paid partnership tool. Include a channel in your plan only if it is available to you.
Captions that point to the bio
If you write a caption directing people to your bio, treat that sentence as a pointer in your publishing notes. The managed bio URL measures the eventual link activity. A caption saying "link in bio" does not give your shared bio URL a separate label for that post. This plan makes no claim about clickable URLs in captions or Reels.
Why one bio link hides which post drove the click
Suppose several posts in your publishing plan all point toward the same bio link. Its count tells you that URL was used, but cannot distinguish which post persuaded someone. A new caption does not create a new measurement on an unchanged URL. Even a carefully named bio link remains a bio placement if several recommendations direct people there.
As a general web limitation, clicks from the Instagram app's in-app browser may arrive with little or no referrer detail. That is not an Instagram policy or a promise about any particular click. Referrer information cannot reliably recover a missing placement label. Separate links per placement or per campaign are the reliable signal because you know where you published each URL. If someone shares that URL elsewhere, its count includes that use too.
A naming scheme you can read later
Use recommendation, channel, placement, and a date when the date matters. These are illustrative sample rows, following the homepage's labeled sample-preview style. They are examples only, not live links, customer data, or performance results. Replace {handle} with your own handle.
/{handle}/serum-ig-bio: sample label "Serum - Instagram bio - campaign X."/{handle}/serum-ig-story-1019: sample label "Serum - Instagram Story - October 19."/{handle}/serum-ig-dm: sample label "Serum - Instagram DM recommendation."
The date suffix is a reminder, not an automatic time filter. Keep the year and publication context in your notes. Create another slug for another Story you want to compare. If one DM link is used for several replies, it measures that group of replies together. Choose that grouping deliberately rather than trying to separate it afterward.
A setup workflow
- Pick the recommendation. Choose the product or resource and open its destination. Check that the page still matches your reason for recommending it. Record the destination you reviewed, including any affiliate parameters you need to preserve. A tidy public URL cannot repair the underlying offer.
- List the Instagram spots you will use. Write down the campaign bio slot, each dated Story, and any reply placement you intend to use. Record Reel captions that point to the bio as context for the bio campaign. Keep that context distinct from a separately measured link.
- Create one managed link per spot. Give each planned placement a different public URL, even when all lead to the same destination. Use names you can recognize weeks later. Decide now whether replies should be grouped or split, then keep that decision consistent.
- Place it and check the destination. Match each URL to the spot in your notes. Follow the cited Help workflow for profile links and the cited sticker guidance for Stories. Open the published route you can verify and check the landing page. Review the recommendation and disclosure beside it as well.
- Watch a few weeks. Compare the same dates across your managed links, while noting when each placement was published. A continuing bio campaign and one dated Story have different exposure windows. Record destination changes so you can explain which offer a count covered.
- Compare and decide. Review human clicks, unique-visitor estimates, device, and location. You might swap what sits in the bio, reuse a Story format that pulled clicks, or drop spots with little activity. Write down the decision and its date. Those are publishing choices; they do not establish a revenue gain.
Change one useful thing at a time where practical. If you change the recommendation, the wording, and the destination together, the count cannot tell you which change mattered. You can still make the editorial decision, but describe the evidence as link activity rather than a controlled experiment.
Rotating the bio link without breaking old posts
Keep the difference between a public URL and its destination clear. When existing references use a managed URL, you can change that link's destination once and future clicks follow the update. You do not have to chase every old reference just to replace the destination address. If your campaign has three separate managed links, review and update each relevant one.
A destination edit does not rewrite an old caption or the content of a Story. It cannot turn an old product recommendation into a different one. Review prices, product names, and disclosures before redirecting readers somewhere new. The maintenance guide explains how to rotate your bio link without editing old posts while checking whether the surrounding promise still fits.
What MyAffiliate.link reports
The public homepage describes human and bot clicks, unique-visitor estimates, location by country, region, and city, device type, browser, and operating system. The included allowance is 500 active links and 50,000 human clicks per month. Those are plan limits, not predicted activity for an Instagram campaign.
The Privacy Policy describes referrer host and path with query strings dropped, and approximate location and device context. Click analytics do not store raw visitor IP addresses, cookies, or full user-agent strings. Redirects set no cookies on people who click. Unique-visitor estimates use a one-way, account-scoped pseudonymous visitor key; they are not verified identities or a list of Instagram accounts. Read a missing referrer as missing information, and keep the placement name you assigned as the basis for the comparison.
What click data cannot prove
A click is not conversion attribution, an order, or earnings. The merchant's records answer whether an action was credited and whether a commission was approved. A managed link's click count cannot prove merchant tracking persisted after a destination change, either. Check the final destination and the parameters required by your program.
Click tracking also does not disclose an affiliate relationship. A short URL and a dashboard count cannot replace clear wording around a recommendation. For the broader measurement boundary, read what click data cannot prove and the Privacy Policy. Use clicks to choose what to review next, without treating them as evidence of a sale or a person's identity.
Disclosure reminder
The FTC's Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers explains that disclosures should be hard to miss and placed with the endorsement. Keep the relationship clear where you make the recommendation. Instagram's branded content guidance says creators must tag the business partner when posting branded content involving an exchange of value, using the paid partnership label. This is operational guidance, not legal advice. Review the platform and program requirements that apply to your work.
Frequently asked questions
Can I track which Instagram Story got the click?
Yes, if each Story gets its own managed link and you record where you used it. The count follows that URL. Reusing the URL in another Story combines those clicks, so a separate link and a publication date are the basis for a Story-by-Story comparison.
Should my bio link and Story links be different?
Yes, when you want to compare those placements. They can lead to the same recommendation, but each needs its own managed public URL for separate click totals. Keep one bio link for a campaign and a different link for each Story you want to measure.
Can I see which Reel sent someone to my bio?
Only indirectly. If your publishing plan sends several Reel audiences to one bio link, that link combines their clicks. A dedicated campaign link and a record of publication dates can provide context, but MyAffiliate.link does not promise post-level referrer data or identify which Reel prompted a visit.
Will changing my bio link break old posts?
Changing the destination of an existing managed link keeps that public URL the same for future clicks. Replacing the public URL is a different choice. Neither action updates wording in an old post, so review whether its recommendation still matches what people will find at the destination.
Does click tracking show my commissions?
No. Click reports describe interactions with your managed links. They do not show purchases, approved commissions, or earnings, and they cannot prove that merchant tracking persisted. Use the merchant or program records for credited actions and payouts.
